Since 2013, every primary school has received funding from the Government to improve PE and Health provision. Each school receives a set amount depending on the number of pupils on roll. In previous years Our Lady of Pity RC Primary School received £8000 a year plus an additional £5 per pupil. This academic year the PE premium has increased. Schools will receive £16,000 with an additional payment of £10 per pupil. Schools must use the funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of the PE and Sport they offer.
Department for Education Vision for the Primary PE and Sport Premium
ALL pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy, active lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.
Objective
To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools. It is important to emphasise that the focus of spending must lead to long lasting impact against the vision (above) that will live on well beyond the Primary PE and Sport Premium funding.
It is expected that schools will see an improvement against the following 5 key indicators:
- The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
- The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
- Increased confidence, Knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
- Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
- Increased participation in competitive sport.

Our School Priorities
Curriculum
We aim to improve the quality and depth of curriculum PE Teaching. To achieve this we have employed a specialist PE teacher who will work alongside class teachers to raise standards of teaching in a range of sporting areas. This will include curriculum support and team teaching opportunities.
Participation
We offer a range of after school clubs and we encourage all children to participate by offering free places to target groups.
Competition
The number of children participating in competitions, fixtures and tournaments has significantly increased. We have had many successes in a range of sports and with different year groups and we are working hard and preparing for the next round of competitions. This year Our Lady of Pity RC Primary School is looking to enter a higher number of teams into competitions so that even more children have the opportunity to compete.
Resources
Increased quality, quantity and range of PE and Sport resources will allow staff to deliver high quality curriculum PE and out of school activities.
Swimming
Maintaining the number of hours of swimming time per pupil will help the school to achieve a higher % of children achieving National Curriculum swimming expectations.
Accountability:
From September 2013, schools will be held to account over how they spend their additional, ring-fenced funding. Ofsted will strengthen the coverage of PE and sport within the ‘Inspectors’ handbook’ and supporting guidance so that both schools and inspectors know how sport and PE will be assessed in future as part of the school’s overall provision.
Ofsted have carried out a survey reporting on the first year’s expenditure of additional funding and its impact. This can be found on the Ofsted website.
Schools will also be required to include details of their provision of PE and sport on their website, alongside details of their broader curriculum, so that parents can compare sports provision between schools, both within and beyond the school day.
The school website needs to show the following information:
- The amount of grant received
- How it has been spent (or will be spent)
- What impact the school has seen on pupils’ Physical Education and sport participation and;
- Attainment as a result, to help to ensure that all pupils develop healthy lifestyles
